چکیده مقاله:

The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional antennas. It is a time slotted protocol, which is highly scalable. Moreover, it can provide a high number of concurrent communications, depending on the number of directional antennas mounted on each node, great fairness in bandwidth sharing and significant energy saving. In particular, energy saving provided by our scheme is consistently higher compared to those of usual directional MAC protocols for the following reasons. Firstly, control packets are sent only over fairly selected beams rather than over all the available ones. Secondly, our protocol provides a filtering, i.e. a fair selection, of the nodes that can try the access to the medium in each time slot. Simulation results validate the advantages of our protocol by proving high spatial reuse, great fairness and significant energy saving and by showing that it improves the overall system performance.

A Directional-to-Directional MAC protocol for ad-hoc networks

The use of directional antennae in ad-hoc networks has received growing attention in recent years. However, most directional MAC protocols assume interchangeable directional and omni-directional modes of operation. Such operation reduces the spatial gain and introduces the asymmetry in gain problem. In this paper, we propose a directional-to-directional (DtD) MAC protocol for ad-hoc networks th...

LEBRP - A Lightweight and Energy Balancing Routing Protocol for Energy-Constrained Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

A wireless ad hoc network typically refers to any set of wireless networks where all devices have equal status on a network and are free to associate with any other wireless ad hoc network devices in their range. As the nature of these networks, they commonly do not have external power supplies, and each node has a limited internal power source. In this paper, we put forward a new routing proto...

A Multi-channel MAC Protocol for Ad Hoc Wireless Networks

This paper proposes a medium access control (MAC) protocol for ad hoc wireless networks that can utilize multiple channels dynamically to improve performance. IEEE 802.11 standard provides multiple channels for use, but its MAC protocol is designed only for a single channel. We can achieve improved throughput with multiple channels because multiple transmissions can take place simultaneously wi...
